OUR STORY
The Association of Language and Literacy Educators-Reading Sierra Leone (TALLE-RSL) is a registered non-governmental and non-profit organisation. It was formed in 2004 on the solid conviction of language and numeracy educators that the promotion of quality language and numeracy abilities is a critical variable in the development process of any nation. So, effective teaching and learning of Language and Numeracy skills have been the main focus within the Mission Statement of the TALLE-RSL framework. It works to support the development process of the educational system of Sierra Leone.
Language and Numeracy educators in Teacher Training Institutions, Polytechnics and Universities have been playing leading roles in uniting experiences in preservice instruction, in-service workshops, conferences and research programmes to network the best in promoting the effective teaching of language and numeracy skills, especially in the early and upper grades. Governmental documents further supported this drive, especially the 1991 constitution and the new 2010 Education policy, which recognise the teaching and learning of language and literacy skills in schools and tertiary institutions as ingredients for sustainable development.
The effective use of reading, writing, comprehension, critical thinking and numeracy skills is a prerequisite for attaining sustainable quality education. Sierra Leone was a doyen of quality education. But this credible identity has been eroded over the years due to bad governance, weak educational resources and the destructive impact of the civil war. To date, statistical reports on education in Sierra Leone revealed worrisome indicators of the dismal performance of pupils at public examinations. These dismal outcomes remain critical challenges in building a sound educational base for the country’s socio-economic development. This ugly picture of affairs has urged TALLE-RSL to partner with the government education stakeholders and credible education partners of local and international non-governmental organisations to promote sustainable quality education in Sierra Leone.
TALLE-RSL constitutes a network of language and numeracy educators in Teacher Training Institutions, namely Freetown Polytechnic (FP), Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU), Eastern Technical University (ETU) and Njala University (NU). It encourages voluntarism and members’ commitment to implementing education programmes/projects.
Mission
The Association of Language and Literacy Educators-Reading Sierra Leone (TALLE-RSL) seeks to promote the effective teaching and learning of Language Arts (L1s & L2s) and Numeracy skills at the primary, senior and tertiary education levels through research/surveys, teacher training, consultancy, advocacy, assessment, monitoring, supervision, mentoring and the production of teaching and learning resources for the sustainable development of a sound and productive educational system.

The objectives of TALLE-RSL are defined as shown below:
- Promote and coordinate the teaching of languages and numeracy skills across the educational levels.
- Encourage and support research and assessment activities in the teaching and learning of languages.
- Partner and network with credible local and international organisations with similar objectives.
- Conduct pre-service and in-service trainings on language teaching, content and methods.
- Support the development and production of appropriate language teaching and learning materials.
- To encourage students to exchange programmes with credible universities/higher educational institutions worldwide.
- Establish model schools as preparatory centres of excellence for modelling literacy best practices.
What we do
Therefore, TALLE-RSL’s Scope of Work is designed thus:
- Instructional Materials Development-This includes developing instructional materials (literacy and numeracy) for primary, secondary, and tertiary: readers, guides, manuals, magazines, modules, handbooks, reports, and texts. These materials are gender-sensitive, child-centred, and pedagogically appropriate for classroom instruction.
- In-service teacher pedagogical training-Workshops/training is conducted and are developed to train pre-service and in-service teachers and teacher educators in Teacher Training Colleges.
- Key program considerations-Key priority areas for implementation target, transforming girls’ education, gender-responsive pedagogy, Sexual reproductive health and rights, the community of practice intervention, mother tongue education
- Activities implementation-Key activities include Teacher training, assessment, classroom teacher observation, mentoring and monitoring, and supervision.
- Developing project Proposal-Writing to attract funds for implementation is key in the project’s implementation drive.
- Consultancy-Consultancy service is being provided for any organisation seeking our expertise across the country with a contractual agreement for service delivery signed with the said partner.
